Lotte Biologics’ South Korea plant receives ‘excellent’ green building rating

The 120,000-liter biologics manufacturing facility in Songdo achieved the rating under South Korea’s Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design.

Lotte Biologics, headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, said its Songdo Bio Campus Plant 1 in Incheon has received an “excellent” rating under South Korea’s Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design (G-SEED).

According to the announcement, the certification evaluates building environmental performance across the lifecycle, including design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Plant 1 was assessed across seven categories covering land use and transportation, energy and environmental pollution, materials and resources, water management, maintenance, ecological impact, as well as indoor environmental quality.

Lotte Biologics said environmental considerations were incorporated into the facility’s design and construction, including the use of environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient equipment. The company established a management framework targeting an excellent rating during the preliminary certification process and continued to review the facility against G-SEED criteria throughout construction.

The certification follows the completion of construction and approval for use of Songdo Plant 1, which the company announced in June. The 120,000-liter facility includes eight 15,000-liter stainless steel bioreactors and is designed for large-scale antibody therapeutic manufacturing. Full-scale commissioning and production system validation are scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Lotte Biologics is investing $1 billion in the Songdo Bio Campus, with plans to ultimately build three manufacturing plants at the Incheon site by 2030. The company plans to apply green building principles to future manufacturing facilities as the Songdo campus expands. Lotte Biologics also operates a 45,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Syracuse, New York, supporting its dual-site manufacturing strategy.
