Thermo Fisher Scientific is expanding its cell and gene therapy capabilities by 300,000 square feet, announcing the opening of its new viral vector manufacturing facility in Plainville, Massachusetts.

The new cGMP site features “sustainable construction design, flexible laboratory and production sites, as well as Thermo’s bioproduction technology,” according to the company’s recent announcement. With it, the company will bring approximately 300 jobs to the area in order to boost the development, testing and manufacturing of viral vectors.

Local officials expressed enthusiasm about the opening, with Governor Charlie Barker saying that the new “facility in Plainville will be one of the largest of its kind and will deepen the company's ties and expand its employee footprint in Massachusetts."

According to Thermo, the facility is part of its investment to provide customers with integrated capabilities throughout the entire cell and gene therapy value chain, offering services from early development and scale-up to manufacturing.
