Onyx Scientific invests $2M to expand API manufacturing capacity in UK

The investment will add suites at the CDMO’s Sunderland facility, increasing the total from six to 10, and expanding commercial active pharmaceutical ingredient production.

Onyx Scientific, a UK-based small molecule contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), is investing more than £1.5 million ($2.03 million) to expand its GMP manufacturing facilities in Sunderland, England.

The project will add four GMP suites, increasing the site’s total from six to 10 and expanding capacity for commercial active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production. The additional space will also provide greater flexibility for early-phase GMP manufacturing programs with accelerated timelines.

The investment includes new infrastructure and equipment and is expected to create nine positions across production chemistry, analytical, and quality assurance functions. The CDMO said the new capacity is expected to come online in the first quarter of 2027.

The expanded manufacturing footprint will allow commercial production campaigns and time-sensitive, early-phase GMP programs to be scheduled alongside one another, according to the announcement. Onyx said the additional capacity will also provide greater flexibility as drug development programs change schedules or advance into later stages.

The Sunderland facility is part of Onyx’s UK and U.S. manufacturing network, which provides small molecule drug development and manufacturing services spanning process research and development, solid-state chemistry, analytical development, Phase I through Phase III GMP manufacturing, as well as commercial API supply.
