Artis BioSolutions, headquartered in Carlsbad, California, has launched a genetic medicines center in Bilbao, Spain, adding messenger RNA (mRNA) drug substance manufacturing and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation and production capabilities.

The facility also provides synthetic DNA and GMP drug product manufacturing, giving Artis capabilities spanning starting materials, mRNA production, LNP formulation, and drug product manufacturing, according to the announcement.

Artis said the Bilbao site is designed to support development programs involving genetic medicines, with activities ranging from early development through clinical and commercial manufacturing. The company said integrating the capabilities at one site can reduce the number of technology transfers required between development and manufacturing stages.

“The genetic medicines landscape has evolved rapidly, but development remains significantly fragmented. Companies are often required to coordinate across multiple suppliers, adding unnecessary time, cost, and risk. Our Genetic Medicines Center of Excellence challenges this paradigm by providing a single strategic partner from starting materials through commercialization,” Peter Stolba, chief business officer at Artis BioSolutions, said in a statement.

The mRNA and LNP capabilities expand Artis’ manufacturing portfolio beyond its existing synthetic DNA operations. The company said the center will support the development of genetic medicines and vaccines requiring nucleic acid production, delivery technologies, and GMP drug product manufacturing.

The expansion follows Artis BioSolutions’ 2025 acquisition of Landmark Bio, a Watertown, Massachusetts-based advanced therapy manufacturing organization. Landmark Bio continued operating as a distinct entity following the acquisition, providing process development, GMP manufacturing, analytical testing, and regulatory services for cell and gene therapies. The company said the Bilbao facility complements Artis’ U.S. operations, including the site in Watertown.
