Hovione adds commercial-scale tablet manufacturing capacity at Portugal site
Hovione, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) based in Switzerland, has completed a more than €40 million expansion of its tablet development and manufacturing center in Loures, Portugal, adding 25% to the center’s manufacturing area and increasing commercial-scale batch tableting capacity.
The expansion adds a second tableting line that mirrors the existing line across dispensing, blending, dry granulation, tableting, and film coating operations. The lines support batch sizes of 300 to 400 kg and provide additional capacity and redundancy for production. Supporting areas, including in-process control and staging space, were also expanded, the company said.
The additional capacity supports Hovione’s integrated manufacturing of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs), combining spray drying and tableting at the same site. The company said the setup allows both processes to be performed within the same quality system.
The Loures campus also includes a continuous tablet manufacturing line added in 2022. The company said the latest expansion created 50 jobs in production, engineering, quality, science, and technology.
The latest development follows Hovione’s May announcement with Industrial Design Consultancy Ltd. (IDC) that its intranasal drug delivery platform was available for commercial partnerships. The platform combines particle engineering, formulation, drug product manufacturing, and device capabilities and includes a single-use nasal dry powder device. Hovione and IDC are also developing a multidose version.
