AstraZeneca announces plant closings, layoffs

AstraZeneca will be closing two manufacturing sites in Colorado in order to consolidate its biologics manufacturing network in one large-scale drug substance facility.

Facilities in Boulder and Longmont, purchased from Amgen in 2015 and 2016 respectively, will be closed and consolidated into a site currently operating in Frederick, Maryland.

The closings will result in 210 layoffs, according the the WARN notice.

The news comes shortly after the drugmaker announced an organizational change will involve the creation of therapy area-focused R&D units, as well as the appointment of controversial cancer doctor, José Baselga, to head research and development for oncology,
