Northway Biotech, a contract development and manufacturing organization, has opened a new cell therapy and personalized medicine center in Vilnius, Lithuania following its June announcement that the facility was nearing completion.

The Northway Group invested €61 million (approximately $70 million) in the 3,500-square-meter facility, which is part of the company’s BIO CITY III development. The center will provide development and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) manufacturing services for autologous and allogeneic cell therapies, personalized therapeutic vaccines, regenerative medicine applications, and 3D human tissue technologies.

The facility includes up to 20 independent cGMP-compliant manufacturing lines, quality control laboratories, cleanroom systems, and segregated infrastructure for cell-based manufacturing. The design allows multiple cell-based products and processes to be handled in parallel, while maintaining requirements for product identity, quality, traceability, and contamination control.

Northway said the facility begins operations with customer programs already secured and contracts in place. Its customers will include biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, university hospitals, and research institutions.

The center will support manufacturing processes in which individual patient material may be handled separately. Its capabilities include cell and tissue technologies for applications such as modified immune cells, personalized therapeutic vaccines, and regenerative medicine. The facility will also support the development of 3D human tissue technologies for drug testing and regenerative medicine research.

The new center is expected to bring together approximately 100 life sciences professionals. The €61 million investment is financed through private funds and a loan from Lithuania’s national development bank ILTE.

The facility expands Northway Biotech’s existing capabilities in mammalian and microbial biologics and gene therapy. BIO CITY I houses biologics development and manufacturing operations in Vilnius and Boston, while the adjacent BIO CITY II complex contains the company’s gene therapy center.
