Lonza launches rapid custom media prototyping for bioprocess development

The service offers non-GMP custom media batches of up to 100 liters or 10 kilograms, with target turnaround times of up to 10 working days.

Lonza, a Switzerland-based contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has launched its Rapid Media Prototyping Service (RaMP) to provide biopharmaceutical companies with custom liquid and powder media for early-stage process development.

The service offers non-GMP powder batches ranging from 1 to 10 kilograms and liquid batches from 1 to 100 liters, with target production turnaround times of up to 10 working days, according to the company. Lonza said the service is intended to support early screening, process confirmation, and development activities by providing custom media in smaller quantities before larger-scale manufacturing.

RaMP is part of Lonza’s custom media and buffer services, which span media development, screening, non-GMP prototyping, and commercial GMP manufacturing. The CDMO said connecting early formulation work with future manufacturing requirements can help reduce development complexity, support scale-up, and facilitate technology transfer.

The service is being launched as Lonza continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities for complex biopharmaceutical products. In July, the company announced plans to add a second commercial-scale aseptic antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) filling line at its Stein, Switzerland, facility. The multipurpose line is expected to be operational in 2030 and will complement other drug product and ADC manufacturing investments at the site.

Lonza is also expanding payload-linker manufacturing and purification capabilities at its Visp, Switzerland facility, with new multipurpose suites expected to begin ramping up in 2029. The investments are part of the company’s broader expansion of capabilities across the ADC development and manufacturing lifecycle.
