Vertex fires COO for "personal behavior"

Jan. 25, 2019

Vertex fired its chief operating officer/interim chief financial officer after an internal investigation revealed he had violated the company's code of conduct with undisclosed "personal behavior."

The drugmaker terminated the employment of Ian Smith for reasons not specified, but said that his actions were not related to Vertex's finances or business performance.

Paul Silva, senior vice president and the company’s corporate controller and chief accounting officer since 2008, has been appointed in the interim.

The news was followed by several social media posts  about Vertex's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
