DuPont Engineering Polymers

DuPont Engineering Polymers is launching a global initiative to support manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and non-implantable medical devices in capturing the performance and cost benefits of its materials.

The DuPont business unit is developing and testing a broad portfolio of engineering plastics and elastomers that can meet varying levels of manufacturing control required for healthcare components or products. The business will also provide valuable assistance to customers in material selection, tool design, molding optimization and documentation of compliance of materials and manufacturing controls with regulatory or customer requirements.

“Our healthcare initiative is a strategic move to bring to healthcare product manufacturers the benefits of DuPont expertise in science, technology, quality and safety in manufacturing, regulatory compliance and other areas,” said Cynthia Crouch, global healthcare initiative manager for DuPont Engineering Polymers. “We have a broad polymer portfolio that can meet a wide range of application needs, global manufacturing and supply strength and long experience in delivering expert assistance to molders,” she added. “Our objective is to become a material supplier of choice to the healthcare segment for pharmaceutical and non-implantable medical devices.”

The existing DuPont Engineering Polymers portfolio contains nine families of materials. Among them are DuPont Crastin PBT thermoplastic polyester, Delrin acetal, Hytrel thermoplastic ether-ester elastomer, Zenite LCP liquid crystal polymer, Zytel HTN high-performance polyamide and Zytel nylon resins.

The use of DuPont engineering polymers can allow manufacturers to develop part and system designs that are either very costly or not feasible in metal or other materials. Just a few of their many potential healthcare applications include nonimplantable medical devices, drug delivery systems, surgical instruments, analytical and diagnostic equipment parts such as valves, pumps or housings, and material handling components for pharmaceutical production.
