The Center for Breakthrough Medicines has announced a plan to build the world’s largest facility dedicated to cell and gene therapy manufacturing in Pennsylvania.
The company, a CDMO created by The Discovery Labs and Deerfield Management Company, says that the new plant will help create needed capacity in the burgeoning cell and gene therapy market.
The new $1.1 billion facility will take up about 40 percent of The Discovery Labs’ 1.6 million square foot biotech and health care campus in King of Prussia, Pa. As part of the major project, The Center for Breakthrough Medicines also plans to hire about 2,000 scientists, lab techs, CGMP manufacturing experts and support staff.
The new facility will have end-to-end capabilities for cell and gene therapy manufacturing including process development, plasmid DNA and viral vector production, cell banking, cell processing and support testing.
