Merck & Co. advised Cubist Pharmaceuticals' employees that it is eliminating the Lexington, Mass.-based company's drug discovery department, which affects 120 employees.
According to an article in the Boston Business Journal, the cuts will affect about 20 percent of Cubist's 600 or so employees in the state. Cubist employs about 1,000 people in total.
Lainie Keller, Merck's director of global communications, said that the "difficult decision" came as Merck was reviewing its assets, which includes a 450-employee research center in Boston and a Boston-based business development center, the article said.
