Advanced Technology For Protein Purification Reduces Processing Costs, Saves Time

Pall Life Sciences, a global leader in filtration, separation and purification, has introduced the most advanced chromatography sorbents for processing large amounts of protein during the capture and intermediate steps of purification. The Pall Q and S HyperCel ion exchange sorbents also contribute significantly to cost and time savings for laboratory to production scale applications. The new Pall sorbents with Q and S chemistries share the same HyperCel media platform with the company’s mixed-mode sorbents (MEP, HEA and PPA HyperCel).  HyperCel sorbents are structured on a mechanically- and chemically-stable base matrix designed for protein capture and impurity removal. The Q and S sorbents, which are suitable for laboratory and process-scale use, help process recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, plasma derivatives and other proteins from various feedstock.

Pall Q and S HyperCel sorbents will debut during IBC Life Sciences’ Biopharmaceutical Development & Production Week (La Costa Resort & Spa, Carlsbad, California, March 2-6) and also will be displayed at INTERPHEX 2009 (Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York City, March 17-19).

Pall’s new Q and S HyperCel sorbents:

  • Can be operated at high flow rates with industry-standard columns and systems. The sorbents deliver high throughput attributed to flow performance and high dynamic binding capacities (>150 mg/mL of protein at two minutes residence time). Faster binding and elution reduces processing time and enhances the plant throughput.
  • Bring new selectivities for ion exchange separations and new options to separate target protein from contaminants. Binding and elution in moderate salt conditions also may contribute to a better separation between target protein and impurities.
  • Can minimize salt concentration to desorb bound protein, meaning less subsequent processing is required for the next downstream processing step -- buffer exchange, dilution, or diafiltration.
  • Deliver a proven sorbent for large scale applications, with easy packing and handling compatible with industry-standard columns and systems. The sorbents are operated at high flow rates (500-600 cm/hr) and low backpressure (typically < 1.5 bar in 40 cm ID columns).
  • Contribute to lowering downstream processing costs and enhanced process economics.

The new Pall sorbents are available in a variety of packaging configurations, including convenient 1 ml pre-packed Pall PRC columns designed for fast methods optimization and selectivity screening.
