National Cancer Institute director Norman Sharpless has been selected to serve as acting commissioner for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, following Scott Gottlieb's resignation earlier this month. Sharpless will take over following Gottlieb’s exit in April.
Sharpless has been the head of the National Institutes of Health’s cancer unit since 2017 where he directed the largest division.
The search for a permanent FDA chief is still under way.
