July 26, 2019

Merck will invest some $680 million in new manufacturing space and expanded packaging space to support its HPV vaccine Gardisil.

The project will enable Merck to increase production of Gardasil and Gardasil 9, human papillomavirus vaccines used to prevent several cancers.

The drugmaker will invest more than $680 million to build a 225,000-square-foot API plant at its Maurice R. Hilleman Center for Vaccine Manufacturing in Durham, North Carolina, and expand packaging facilities in nearby Wilson, North Carolina.

Merck expects the Durham location to create 391 jobs and the Wilson County expansion to create 34 jobs.
