Facing pressure from Amazon, CVS launches prescription delivery service

Since the news was announced last year that Amazon could enter the prescription drug distribution business, rumors have run rampant about how that move will impact the pharma industry. But CVS Health isn’t waiting to find out.

This week, the company, which owns about 9,800 pharmacies, said it will begin delivering prescription orders to patients. In most cases, the services will cost $4.99. In some cities, same day service will run $8.99. CVS will also deliver other pharmacy items from the store including some over-the-counter medications.

While Amazon continues to mull a move into the drug delivery market, several startups have emerged that will bring medications to patients’ homes either through courier delivery or the mail.
