Pfizer Subpoenaed in IV Saline Probe

April 20, 2017

Pfizer has received grand jury subpoenas from the U.S. Justice Department in connection with an antitrust investigation related to the sale and marketing of intravenous saline solutions amid a shortage years ago.

Pfizer disclosed that it has received the subpoenas shortly after ICU Medical, which recently acquired Pfizer's Hospira Infusion Systems, and Baxter International declared receiving similar subpoenas.

The probe dates back to 2015, when a bipartisan group of U.S. senators asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate a 2013 shortage of intravenous saline solutions that ultimately led to price increases of up to 300 percent.
