Johnson & Johnson has lost another lawsuit because of its talcum powder's link with cancer, this one with the largest sum yet.
The Los Angeles Superior Court has ordered J&J to pay $417 million to California resident Eva Echeverria, whose suit alleged that J&J failed to adequately warn consumers about the cancer risks of its talc-based products, instead the company encouraged women to use its products despite knowing of studies that linnked ovarian cancer to genital talcum powder use. J&J must pay $70 million in compensatory damages and $347 million in punitive damages.
J&J has already been subject to more than $300 million in previous verdicts and still must face 4,800 similar claims around the country.
The company plans to appeal the verdict.
