Perrigo Buys Omega Pharma for $4.5B, Growing OTC Portfolio

Nov. 6, 2014

Dublin-based Perrigo has agreed to buy Belgian health-products provider Omega Pharma for $4.5 billion.

A few weeks ago, Bloomberg reported that several big name bidders were competing with Perrigo for Omega, including Actavis, Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim. According to Perrigo, the new acquisition places the company among the world’s five largest providers of over-the-counter healthcare remedies.

Omega owns cold and cough, skincare, pain relief, weight management and gastrointestinal treatment brands, among its 2000 products.

Perrigo bought Irish drug company Elan Corp. last year for about $8.6 billion, in a tax inversion maneuver, allowing it to move its corporate address from Michigan to Ireland.
