Anti-vaxxers turn to potatoes

April 19, 2019

A new and weird rumor has surfaced in the anti-vaccine movement: potatoes can suck the toxins from vaccines out of kids' arms.

(Full disclosure: we can't exactly vouch for the validity of this important update)

And April 12 Twitter post read: "You can vaccinate your kids and then hold a raw potato to the wound where the needle entered, and it will suck the toxins from the vaccines out, leaving only the non-toxic parts. It's a great way to stay healthy AND thwart big pharma!"

Leading global health organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have recently been publicly identifying verifiable vaccine hoaxes, including rumors about vaccines causing autism and that the polio virus was simply a conspiracy. Streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu have eliminated anti-vaxxer videos from their line-ups. Facebook also vowed to stop the spread of anti-vaccine misinformation by taking action against pages that spread false info.

In terms of the newest potato method? Not a lot of science behind it, but then again, science hasn't been much of a factor in this debate. Most people agree that if it gets people vaccinating children, then it's a win.
