The Amsterdam University Medical Center will use a 5 million euros donation to make generic versions of orphan medicines.
The donation from the Dutch lottery association, VriendenLoterij, will be used by the teaching hospital to prepare more drugs in its own pharmacy and therefore produce them more cheaply and quickly.
Last year the hospital made its own version of a licensed drug to treat a rare metabolic disorder. The hospital began producing the drug, known as CDCA, because it was no longer covered by health insurance after manufacturer, Leadiant, increased the price by 500 percent.
