Congress to FDA: Time to Reclassify Hydrocodone Painkillers

Congress is asking the FDA to take “swift action” when it comes to reclassifying prescription painkillers containing hydrocodone. In a February 15 posting, Pharmalot blogger Ed Silverman reports that a congressional group of six Democrats and two Republicans have urged, through a letter to the U.S Food and Drug Administration’s commissioner Margaret Hamburg to reclassify drugs like Vicodin to Schedule II from Schedule III. Critics, especially those in the thread of comments to Silverman’s post, point out that the move would severely limit legitimate pain-suffering patients’ access to these medications.
