Vertex announced plans to build a new 344,000 square foot research and manufacturing facility in Boston’s Seaport.
The site is expected to be operating in 2025, which will make Vertex the largest biotech in Boston in terms of square footage. The new facility, along with an existing facility recently dedicated to the company’s executive chairman and former CEO, Jeffrey Leiden, will be called the Leiden Campus and will enable further research and development of cell and gene therapies. The new building will house labs, offices and manufacturing capabilities for approximately 500 additional employees.
Founded in 1989 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Vertex is now headquartered in Boston’s Innovation District. The biotech focuses on the creation of transformative medicines with its most popular being drugs treating cystic fibrosis.
“Building on our achievements in cystic fibrosis, Vertex is at a new inflection point, and our continued expansion will enable our continued growth as we work to bring many more transformative — if not curative — medicines to patients who are waiting,” said Reshma Kewalramani, president and CEO at Vertex.
