Shares of major drug retailers fell on Friday after reports that Amazon.com Inc. was exploring the sale of prescription drugs online, according to a Reuters story.
Amazon is reportedly in discussions with pharmacy benefit managers, says brokerage firm Leerink analyst Ana Gupte, and has been hiring experts to evaluate the drug retailing market for possible entry.
“We are convinced that Amazon will almost certainly enter the drug distribution value chain within two years, evolving into a more disruptive offering over time,” Gupte said.
