Pfizer Sues India's Torrent to Delay Generic Viagra

March 20, 2014

Pfizer sued India-based Torrent Pharmaceuticals in New York and New Jersey federal courts seeking to stop the sale and marketing of a generic version of Viagra, arguing it is still under patent.

Pfizer's patent for Viagra does not expire until Oct. 22, 2019.

Torrent filed an abbreviated new drug application to gain FDA approval to sell a generic form of Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, however Pfizer contests that Torrent’s ANDA filing infringes on a 2002 patent which covers sildenafil citrate specifically for erectile dysfunction treatment.
