French Drugmaker on Trial for Suspected Deaths

Trials began on Tuesday for Servier Laboratories, the French drugmaker that sold diabetes and weight loss drug Mediator, which is suspected in the deaths of hundreds of people. The trial has been delayed for many years, but Servier founder Jacques Servier is now facing charges of "aggravated deception" for misleading the public about his product's safety. It is estimated that between 1976 and 2009, roughly 5 million people took Mediator and as a result, over 500 hundred people have died, though some studies believe there may be even more.
