Former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson on FDA Resources

Bloomberg interviewed former HHS Secretary Thompson about food safety yesterday. The  Agency has launched a study of food safety and potential contamination from avian flu virus. Mr. Thompson told Bloomberg that FDA has 20% of the nation's food inspectors but does 80% of the food inspections. (The Department of Agriculture, he says, has 80% of the food inspectors, but does 20% of inspections), more evidence of an Agency under stress.  But, despite its daunting workload, FDA isn't likely to become the "Drug Administration" any time soon. Wouldn't it be easier to focus on drugs and nutraceuticals?
