AstraZeneca Decided for Paperless Solution

AstraZeneca opted for a paperless solution that would allow for data trending and a centralized, accessible calibration data base. It is cost effective.

AstraZeneca in Sweden recently decided that it needed a new solution to calibration. One that would reduce the time required, and, with it, production downtime. But it also needed a solution that would be robust enough to handle demand at the facility, which processes some 21,000 calibration certificates every year, and wanted to make calibration data easily available throughout the plant. At the time, multiple calibration processes were stored on 12 different databases with 4 to 5 different workflows. “We needed to reduce the time from start to finish”, says calibration manager Anders Ånlind, “but we also wanted to highlight adverse calibration trends.”

AstraZeneca had a basic performance checklist:

  • Items should be identified before they are out of tolerance (items that don’t have issues could be calibrated less frequently.
  • Calibration data would have to made available through any desktop computer within AstraZeneca.
  • The technology selected would need to simplify data entry and reduce the number of data input errors found with paper certificates.

After evaluating alternatives, the company selected Beamex’s CMX for calibration management, which will now be used at every production site in Sweden. The contract includes Beamex’s “CMX for server” calibration management software, training and software support. The server version of CMX enables several plants within the corporation to use and share the same database.

Benefits have already been realized from the new system, which has proven to be cost effective by replacing manual verification and approval, paper documentation, and allowing for data trending
