Porosimeter Eliminates Need for Mercury, High Pressures
A new Liquid Extrusion Porosimeter can determine pore volume without the need for mercury or other toxic chemicals to measure liquid permeability. The equipment is operated at low pressure so it will not distort the pore structure, and the test sample can be reused. The sample is soaked in a liquid that spontaneously fills its pores. The pressure of a nonreacting gas on the top of the sample is then increased to displace liquid from the pores and the volume of displaced liquid is measured. Pore diameter is obtained from pressure readings, while volume, diameter and volume distribution are also computed.
