AIM Global Publishes New Coding Quality Guideline

PharmaManufacturing.com

AIM Global announced on Jan. 10 the publication of the Direct Part Mark (DPM) Quality Guideline, developed by a joint ad hoc committee of members of AIM Global's Technical Symbology Committee (TSC), and intended to be a bridge between existing print quality standards and the direct mark environment.

DPM is a technology whereby an item is physically altered by methods such as dot peening, laser etching, molding or embossing to produce two different surface conditions. As a result, there is often very little or no contrast between the "marked" elements of a symbol and the background. Contrast needed to decode a bar code can be achieved by using specific types of lighting and signal processing techniques.

The document, which addresses the problem of assessing and quantifying the quality of DPM symbols, was developed by the DPM Quality Work Group, a subset of AIM's TSC with additional participation from public and private sector representatives who make and read these marks.

The full technical document is now available at the AIM Store: https://www.aimglobal.org/estore/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=516.
