Swiss-based Lonza Group and Singapore’s Bio*One Capital recently announced they are jointly building a US$350 million large-scale mammalian cell culture facility, Lonza Biologics Tuas -- the second in Singapore for commercial biopharmaceuticals manufacturing. With two cell culture plants in development, Singapore is becoming a major manufacturing location for biologics.
The new facility will have up to four mammalian bioreactor trains, each with a flexible capacity of 1,000 up to 20,000 liters inclusive of the respective purification units. The plant will be constructed over two phases, the first initiating in February 2007, and the final build-out becoming operational at the latest in 2011, with the hiring of 350 employees. When fully completed, it will operate with cutting edge technology and a skilled labor force, and will manufacture products with a wide array of processes, yields and technologies.
This joint venture leverages on Singapore's strengths in competitive, highly-technological manufacturing and its capabilities in GMP production of bulk actives for global pharmaceutical companies.
