USP Offers Fellowships, Internships

The United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Rockville, Md., is now accepting applications for its USP Fellowship Program 2006–2007. USP’s fellows, who are graduate students enrolled in chemistry and pharmacy programs, will begin work in June 2006. The application deadline is March 31, 2006.
Fellows will research a variety of USP focus areas that may include:
- Chemical analysis of botanical dietary supplements;
- Biotechnology-based molecule characterization;
- Analytical procedures using reduced solvent levels;
- Powder characterization, water adsorption/desorption;
- Biopharmaceutical quality;
- Pharmacy compounding;
- Development of stability-indicating procedures for compounded preparations;
- Medication error reporting and prevention;
- Clinical decision support;
- Drug utilization review; and
- Veterinary medicine.
Each fellow will be awarded a $20,000 stipend, of which a portion is used to help support the fellow and the costs of the research he or she conducts.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of USP’s fellowship program. Since the program’s inception in 1981, USP has invested more than $ 2.9 million in 193 fellowship awards. USP will be hosting the annual USP Fellowship Recognition Program in early summer 2006 and will expand the festivities to include a 25 th anniversary celebration. Past and present fellows will be given the opportunity to discuss their current work as it relates to their USP fellowship. USP Internship Program
The USP Summer Internship Program offers the opportunity for health professions students to spend 12 weeks at USP working on a defined project.
The 2006–2007 USP Internship Program has been postponed due to building construction at USP headquarters. USP will issue a public announcement when the program resumes. Visit www.usp.org for more information.
