Throckmorton Named Deputy Director of FDA's CDER

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced September 22 that it has selected Dr. Douglas Throckmorton as the Deputy Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). Throckmorton joined FDA in 1997 and has been acting Deputy Director of CDER since May 2004.

"Doug's medical, regulatory and leadership skills make him anoutstanding addition to CDER's senior management team and I am honored thathe has agreed to continue as my deputy," said CDER Director Dr. Steven Galson. "Doug has brought invaluable leadership and support to me and others in the Agency and I'm confident that he will continue to do an outstanding job working to protect and advance public health."

In addition to sharing the responsibility for managing the Center's broad national and international activities in drug regulation, Throckmorton will continue to be the founding chair of FDA's new Drug Safety Oversight Board, the CDER liaison to the Agency's human subjects' research review board, and the chair of CDER's revitalized Research Coordinating Committee.

"Dr. Throckmorton is an exceptional clinician and has been animportant leader in FDA's efforts to improve the science around drugregulation and drug development through our Critical Path initiative," said FDA Commissioner Lester M. Crawford. "He is also a champion of our efforts to improve tools for communicating drug safety information to patients, and for improving the process for getting safe and effective drugs to patients who can benefit from them."

Prior to serving as Acting Deputy Director, Throckmorton was the Director of CDER's Division of Cardiovascular and Renal Drug Products (DCRDP). He joined DCRDP in 1997 as a Medical Officer, was promoted to Deputy Director in 2000 and to the Director position in 2002. Before starting his FDA career, Throckmorton practiced medicine and held academic appointments at the Medical College of Georgia and the VA Medical Center in Augusta.
