Siemens (Munich, Germany) and the Swiss packaging firm Limmatdruk/Zeiler have teamed up to offer a new RFID solution for pharmaceutical packaging. The solution involves consulting, IT integration, RFID read devices and packaging with RFID chips.

The chips can be attached, either to outer packaging or packaging for individual products, ampules or syringes, depending on product value. Siemens Automation and Drives is contributing the chips and read/write, high-frequency (13.56 MHz) read/write devices, while Siemens Business Services handles the feasibility analysis, process consulting and IT integration services. Limmatdruck/Zeiler, Roche Pharmaceutical's sole packaging supplier in Switzerland, is contributing the packaging and packaging machines required.

Siemens is currently targeting RFID for pharmaceutical and other applications in manufacturing, healthcare and logistics.
